References and Sources Policy

WeightLossTools.in aims to provide practical calculators and educational information supported by credible scientific, health, nutrition, and public-health references.

This policy explains the types of sources we prefer, how references are selected, how conflicting information is handled, and how users can report concerns about a source used on the website.

Our Source Priorities

When researching calculator methodologies, health information, weight-management concepts, nutrition guidance, or supporting educational content, we prioritise authoritative and primary sources wherever practical.

Our preferred source hierarchy includes:

  1. Government health and scientific agencies
  2. International public-health organisations
  3. Original peer-reviewed scientific research
  4. Systematic reviews, scientific consensus statements, and professional guidelines
  5. Recognised academic and medical institutions
  6. Established scientific reference works

Examples of Authoritative Sources

Depending on the subject, WeightLossTools.in may refer to information published by organisations such as:

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • National Health Service (NHS)
  • Other national public-health agencies
  • Universities and recognised academic institutions
  • Peer-reviewed scientific journals

This list is illustrative rather than exclusive. The most appropriate source depends on the subject being discussed.

Primary Sources Are Preferred

Where a calculator is based on a particular equation or published scientific method, we prefer to identify the original publication or another authoritative scientific source describing that method when reasonably available.

Secondary sources may be used to provide additional context or explain how a method is currently used, but they should not automatically replace stronger primary evidence.

Calculator References

Calculator pages may include a Methodology & References section identifying important sources relating to the formula, classification system, activity value, nutritional reference, or health interpretation used by that tool.

Different calculators may rely on different evidence. For example, the sources relevant to BMI classification are different from those used for basal metabolic rate equations, body-composition estimates, macronutrient recommendations, or activity-energy calculations.

Health and Weight-Management Information

Weight management is influenced by many biological, behavioural, environmental, and medical factors. We therefore avoid treating a single calculator result or numerical threshold as a complete description of an individual’s health.

Where an authoritative source describes an important limitation of a method, we aim to communicate that limitation to users. For example, BMI can be useful as a screening measure while still having important limitations when assessing an individual’s body composition or health.

Scientific Evidence Can Change

Science and health guidance evolve. A source considered appropriate when a page is created may later be revised, replaced, withdrawn, or superseded by better evidence.

For this reason, references may be reviewed and updated when calculators or educational content are materially revised.

Publication Date and Freshness

The newest source is not automatically the best source. Some mathematical equations and scientific methods remain useful for many years, while health recommendations and clinical guidance may change more frequently.

We consider both the quality of the source and whether its information remains appropriate for the subject being discussed.

Conflicting Sources

Scientific organisations or professional groups may sometimes use different thresholds, equations, assumptions, or recommendations.

Where meaningful differences exist, WeightLossTools.in may:

  • Select the method most appropriate for the intended calculator
  • Explain which method is being used
  • Describe relevant limitations
  • Identify alternative approaches where they materially affect interpretation
  • Avoid presenting a disputed value as universally accepted

International Audience

WeightLossTools.in serves a global audience. Health classifications, terminology, measurement systems, and recommendations may vary among countries.

We therefore aim to use broadly recognised scientific methods while clearly identifying country-specific guidance when it is relevant. Most applicable calculators support Metric and US/Imperial units so users can select the measurement system appropriate to them.

Sources We Treat With Caution

We do not consider popularity alone to be evidence of scientific reliability.

Greater caution is applied to:

  • Anonymous health claims
  • Unreferenced commercial marketing material
  • Social-media posts presented as scientific evidence
  • Affiliate content without supporting evidence
  • Claims based solely on testimonials
  • Unverified AI-generated factual claims
  • Sources that substantially misrepresent scientific studies

Artificial Intelligence and Sources

Artificial intelligence may assist with editorial workflows in the future, but AI-generated statements are not treated as scientific references.

Where health, scientific, or calculator-methodology claims require supporting evidence, appropriate external sources should be used rather than citing an AI system as the authority.

Commercial Relationships

Advertising, affiliate relationships, sponsorships, or commercial arrangements should not determine which scientific formula or health reference is selected for a calculator.

Where relevant, commercial relationships are addressed separately through our Affiliate Disclosure and other transparency policies.

Broken or Updated References

External websites occasionally change URLs, move documents, update pages, or remove resources. We may replace broken references with an equivalent authoritative source where appropriate.

Suggesting a Source or Reporting a Problem

If you believe an important calculator is based on an outdated reference, a cited source no longer supports the statement made, or a stronger authoritative reference is available, please contact us.

We welcome specific, evidence-based corrections. Submissions should ideally identify the page, the statement or formula concerned, and the proposed authoritative source.

Our Objective

Our objective is not to create the longest possible reference list. It is to use relevant, credible sources that help users understand where important calculations and health information originate and what their limitations are.
