What Is Lean Body Mass?

Lean body mass is body weight minus fat mass. It includes muscle, bone, organs, water, and other non-fat tissues.

Estimates can be useful when comparing body-composition changes or setting protein targets, but equation-based results are approximations.

Formula / Method Used

Uses the Boer equations: male LBM = 0.407W + 0.267H − 19.2; female LBM = 0.252W + 0.473H − 48.3, with kg and cm.

How to Use the Lean Body Mass Calculator

  1. Choose the unit system or options requested by the tool.
  2. Enter the required measurements or planning values.
  3. Select Calculate to view your result and supporting details.
  4. Review the explanation and limitations before using the estimate for planning.

Example Calculation

An 80 kg, 175 cm male produces an estimated lean body mass in the mid-50 kg range.

Limitations

The equation is population-based and may be less accurate at body-size extremes or for unusually muscular individuals.
